If you’ve woken up unwell and can’t make it to work, but seeing a GP isn’t an option today, you might be wondering: can a pharmacist provide a medical certificate? The short answer is yes, but there are important limitations and conditions to understand.

Pharmacists and Work Certificates: What’s Allowed?

In Australia, pharmacists are legally allowed to issue Certificates for Absence from Work under the Fair Work Act 2009. These certificates can be used as evidence to support time off for:

  • Personal leave (if you’re unwell or injured), or

  • Carer’s leave (if you’re looking after an ill or injured immediate family or household member)

These certificates are valid and accepted by many employers, but not all. It’s always a good idea to check with your employer before requesting one from a pharmacist.

When Can You Get a Certificate?

Pharmacists can only issue certificates for minor ailments such as colds, flus, migraines, or stomach bugs, not complex or chronic conditions. They can generally provide cover for up to two days, and the certificate cannot be backdated.

Consultations are ideally done face to face, but video or phone consultations may be acceptable if the pharmacist is confident in their assessment.

What Happens During the Consultation?

The pharmacist will:

  • Assess your condition within their scope of practice

  • Confirm you’re unfit for work or need to care for someone

  • Decide how many days off are appropriate (usually 1 to 2)

  • Provide you with a certificate if appropriate

They’ll also keep a record of the consultation and may charge a small fee for the service.

When Can’t a Pharmacist Help?

A pharmacist cannot issue a certificate if:

  • Your condition is serious or ongoing

  • It’s for worker’s compensation, compassionate leave, or pregnancy-related issues

  • You’re asking for time off for court, school, or sporting commitments

  • There’s a conflict of interest such as issuing a certificate for a family member

If your situation falls outside their scope, they’ll refer you to a GP or appropriate healthcare provider.
